Near Salton Sea, CA (Artist Statement)
After hours of scrambling and squeezing through a narrow, twisted slot canyon, this dry bush was the first life I saw. It was protected from flash floods on a rise where sunlight and water were scarce. Its limbs looked like twists of veins: oxygen-starved, desperate, reaching and growing in the direction of the heart.
In the desert, life can begin and thrive in harsh, surprising places. The persistance is reassuring to me – even through the largest changes, through bombs and great asteroids, there will still be hidden nooks and alcoves where things earnestly grow.
