Caye Caulker, Belize (Artist Statement)
Water has always attracted me as a subject for photography. There is no perfect way to render the way it feels, sounds or moves. Water gives life, sustains life and can take life away. It possesses a certain rhythm – in falling rain, in rolling waves, in tiny bubbles suspended in ice – that we rarely listen to, but could probably not do without.
The seawater in this mangrove forest rose and swirled around the roots like a milky blanket curling and snapping in the wind. The feeling of motion was elusive: with my tripod set up in the shallow cove, I tried many different shutter speeds. I like this one best – the surface of the water is textured and complex, like it contains secrets that I will never really discover.
