Seagrass, Cloudy Water
Caye Caulker, Belize (Artist Statement)
There was life everywhere on this little island – in the trees, on the ground, and especially in the ocean. The seagrass growing in the shallows washed ashore in such great quantities that the locals had to cart it away in wheelbarrows to keep the waterfront walking route clear.
The day was windy: waves stirred the ocean floor and turned the normally clear water to pale green. I liked the way the afternoon sun lit the cloudy water and highlighted the shapes of the weeds sashaying in the surface current. It was mesmerizing to watch. I sat on a broken swaying dock for nearly an hour, watching the patterns come and go, feeling the wind, and making pictures.
I like this exposure best. There is a sense of movement, some kind of departure, some lingering feeling that the wind today may bring some new adventure tomorrow.
