Concrete Walkway, Reflected Branches: Calgary, AB, Canada (2010) - Abstract photograph showing the reflection of a tree layered over cracks in a concrete sidewalk

For hundreds of metres, this sidewalk had been flooded by a rapid Spring thaw. The water was very fresh and clear, and everywhere two worlds had merged into one below my feet. Bare tree limbs stretched down through a rough pane of concrete; wispy clouds floated by below them.

I set my tripod up over a seam in the sidewalk, low down so I could maximize the reflections. I moved my camera until the two scenes overlapped in a slightly whimsical way, the seam leaving the frame one way, the tree the other. It was as though the two worlds were simply passing one another on their way to other places.
