Scattered Lillies, Reflected Sun: Near Squamish, BC, Canada (2003) - Fine art photo of lilly pads and silver reflections on the surface of a lake

I like looking at the reflection of the sky in a calm lake – it seems as though everything floating in the water is suspended in space, like a cloud. It makes me feel like I'm flying.

These crisp new lily pads were scattered in small, fresh clusters on the surface of this lake. Just as light rain began to fall from the dark spring clouds overhead, I made this photograph, setting up my tripod on a huge floating log. As I exposed frame after frame, the sun appeared briefly, allowing me time for only one quick exposure of its pure white light glinting off the silver water. For a long moment, the lake water looked like the storm itself – sublime, violent, beautiful.
