Stem, Leaf

Stem, Leaf: Squamish, BC, Canada (2001) - Macro photograph showing drops of water coating the stem of a plant and leaf highlights against a soft blurry background

The giant leaves on this small plant were what caught my eye. I liked the way they joined to the stem, and the way the stem was able to support the weight of the wet leaves so effortlessly. The early morning dew clinging to the plant looked like tears, or sweat. It all seemed so precarious and athletic.

I focussed on the beads of water and the strong stem of the plant, making the heavy leaf distant and soft. The simple negative shapes and tension between bright colours create a feeling of strength, while the detached leaf gives the photograph a feeling of tenuous balance.
