This stunning dihedral is a very difficult pitch of a route Bruce cleaned in 2002. In this photo, Chris is attempting the pitch for the first time.
The thin crack and the steep angle made for tricky climbing. Chris had to use tiny holds and friction from the opposing walls to make his way gradually up the corner. Though he didn't climb it completely without falling, Chris managed to do every move, proving that the climb would be possible in the future.
In the bottom corner of the frame, the bright sunlight begins to warm the lower walls of the Chief. As I rappelled the route hours later, the sun was finally beginning to take the damp rainforest chill from the air around me.
