Tangled Aspens, Light Snow

Tangled Aspens, Light Snow: Near Bryce Canyon, UT, USA (2007) - Fine art photograph of a warmly lit forest of aspens with light snow on their tangled branches

These wispy young aspens were beautifully lit by a warm sun filtered through light clouds. Highlighted by light snow, their branches tangled together above the trunks like hands reaching from a crowd. Running my eyes from their bases to their tops, I could see the trees gradually blending together, losing identity but gaining strength.

I used a more subtle selective focus for this photograph, blurring the nearest trees so the eye can only rest periodically and with effort. This technique strengthens the image of the forest as one, picking out the bases but making it impossible to separate the throng of clutching hands at their tops.
