Tangled Wires, Broken Wall

La Linea, Spain (Artist Statement)

Tangled Wires, Broken Wall: La Linea, Spain (2006) - Fine art photograph of tangled wires, broken bricks, graffiti, and chipped plaster

I liked the huge jumble of wires above this little wall, and the run-down, used look of the whole scene. The red brick wall was uneven and wavy, and the plaster on the bigger wall was coming away in chunks. They were old, and they were patched, but like many things of their age in Spain, they were still in use. I have always liked the idea of fixing something old instead of creating something new.

I framed the pair of walls and the tangle of wires closely and at a small angle to the lower wall. The road curves slightly away and the telephone pole leans slightly into the photograph. Together, the two elements help to lead the eye around the photo and prevent the flat scene from becoming too static. I thought that a less formal, marginally awkward composition would suit this eclectic mix of objects.
