Mangrove Roots, Smooth Sea

Mangrove Roots, Smooth Sea: Caye Caulker, Belize (2010) - Fine art photograph showing mangrove roots reaching into milky smooth seawater

I found these mangrove roots at the end of a hot, humid mid-afternoon walk around a tropical island. The sea and the shade were welcome relief from the searing sunlight. I waded into the milky ocean to cool off, scaring away a school of fish and a stingray in the process.

On this trip to Central America, Mangroves quickly became one of my favourite plants. I love the way their roots split and weave and reconnect, eventually supporting flourishing stilted islands in the shallows. I spent a lot of time photographing them both above and below the surface of the water.

I set up my tripod in the ocean on the shady side of the grove and made exposure after exposure while the sea flowed around the solid roots. Once it was too dark for pictures, I ventured onto the mainland again and made my back to town through the jungle.
