Meltwater, Concrete: Calgary, AB, Canada (2010) - Abstract photo of a red concrete walkway covered in ice, water and tire tracks

Underneath an overpass, and down the street from where we lived, it was always dark and cold and noisy. There existed a state of in-between – a spot which many people passed through, but not even the street people or prostitutes wanted to occupy for long. During Calgary's many thaws, the speeding trucks would splash slush and meltwater onto the concrete walls and unlucky pedestrians.

The light in this photograph is a mix of daylight and the glow from the arc-sodium lamps lining the walls of the underpass. In a daylight white balance, the streetlights burn nearly orange. I very much like the tracks showing the paths of the travelers, like a guestbook in some hell that should see no visitors.
