Chair Legs, Concrete Floor

Chair Legs, Concrete Floor: Calgary, AB, Canada (2010) - Abstract photograph of intertwined chair legs, silhouetted in a pool of light on a concrete floor

This room, in an aging wing of an otherwise modern university, functioned as the homeroom for a small class of 4th year engineering students. Stark and blank, it housed dented lockers, aging computers, and the damage and detritus left over from many wild parties. During the day, it teemed with activity and the sticky air of people under pressure.

One day, I found myself alone after hours amidst the cast-off things lost in the shuffle. The late afternoon sun shone through the blinds and gleamed off the pock-marked floor. I found myself intrigued by the legs of these chairs, left intertwined in rows and clumps around the room like statues in the likeness of their occupants. There was a natural randomness to it that I could not have replicated.

As the sun sank lower after a long day, I explored the chairs with my camera. I like this barren image of neglect, of disenchantment, and of things left behind.
